Coins During British Rule

As Mumbai Mint was established during the British Rule coins produced then were of the British System. The Mint used to follow the British India Monetary system which is as shown below:

In those days the mint used to produce the coins with the help of three steam engines and had the production capacity of 1,50,000 coins daily. The Silver Refinery, Gold Refinery, Weights and Measures & Assay Department were added to the Mint subsequently.

Coins After Independence
After independence the “Anna/ pai” system was in force (1950-1956). details of same are given below.

Rupee – 11.6 gm (1950/54) 2 annas 1 pice – thick coin (1950)
1/2 rupee 1 anna 1 pice – thinner coin
1/4 rupee 1/2 anna (1950-55)
